Our ancestors, the pillars of our heritage, ignited a dream deep within their hearts — a dream of sovereignty, a dream of steering our own course amidst the vastness of our ocean home. The 1960s brought a glimmer of hope as negotiations commenced. It was a time of anticipation as we took the first steps towards independence.
On July 26, 1965, the sun shone a little brighter, and our hearts swelled with joy as we proudly declared our independence, waving our beloved flag high. Among the family of nations, we secured our rightful place as the world welcomed us with open arms, recognizing our sovereignty and identity.
In 1968, we embraced a new era by transforming into a republic, symbolizing our growth and commitment to shaping our nation.
Today, as proud Maldivians, we celebrate the 59th Independence Day on July 26th across the nation with parades and festivities, reminding us of our hard-won independence.
